Power & Energy Applications

Whether produced using traditional power plants, or renewable sources, electricity is fundamental to everyday life in the modern world. The power and energy sector can be one of the most challenging of environments for electronics, being exposed to some of the harshest of environments and dealing with some of the highest voltages. It is imperative then to ensure that the highest levels or protection are achieved at every level.

Make it our problem

Electrolube’s Conformal Coatings and Encapsulation Resins are used to provide a range of protection levels for electronics used in the power and energy industry. The level of protection required can vary, depending upon the device and the environmental conditions to which it is exposed and this is often a determining factor in the choice between an encapsulation resin and a coating. For example, conformal coatings conform to the contours of a PCB offering protection and extending the working life, but a resin can encapsulate the entire device if required and form a secure barrier against some of the more extreme conditions.

Thermal Management materials are also widely used within the power and energy industry ensuring dissipation of heat away from both components and devices. Electrolube’s range of thermal management materials includes silicone and non-silicone pastes, phase change materials, silicone and non-silicone gap pads, RTVs and bonding products plus thermally conductive encapsulation resins.

Problem

Digital Substations For Power Distribution
Protection of circuit boards in digital substations for power distribution. Current surface modifier coating had issues with connectivity after coating and also blocking of their dip coating machine. Customer required a low film strength nano coating that would enable complete coating of a PCB and connectors without masking, whilst offering protection against humidity and corrosive gases. A UV trace was also desired.

Solution

FPC was specifically developed for this purpose, offering excellent connectivity without masking, due to the low film strength of the coating. It also provided a UV trace for inspection purposes and the added benefit of approval to UL746 for flame retardancy and did not cause issues with machine blockages due to moisture ingress.

Problem

Information displays for solar panels
The customer had a small LCD screen to display information on the performance and connectivity of the solar panels in an array and the unit required protection from the external environment. Issues had arisen with adhesion of resins tested – silicone options used due to the need for low stress on the LCD over a varying temperature range.

Solution

UR5044 was offered to the customer as it has a very stable and low hardness over a wide temperature range. Adhesion of this polyurethane resin was greatly improved compared to the previous silicone resins tested.

Problem

Wind Turbines
Thermal management application for wind turbines. Standard thermal interface requirement but due to the application being green energy, the products used could not be environmentally hazardous.

Solution

HTCX_ZF has been developed specifically for this purpose, using alternative thermally conductive fillers which removed the H410 – very toxic to aquatic life classification. The product also offered an increased thermal conductivity compared to the standard material and thus offered greater efficiency of heat dissipation in customer testing.
